A 28-year-old man piloting a yacht which crashed onto the rocks at Balmoral Beach in Sydney was allegedly drunk at the helm after a day on the water turned tipsy.

Scott Biffin, son of former Sydney Harbour pilot John Biffin, allegedly recorded a blood alcohol reading of 0.165, more than three times the legal limit, after his boat smashed on to the rocks last night.

Police were told the yacht ran out of fuel and another boat tried to tow Mr Biffin to safety.

The pilot sustained minor injuries in the rough surf after abandoning ship.

Mr Biffin has since been charged with high-range drink driving.
