As Dothraki horse lord Khal Drogo in the first season of Game of Thrones, US actor Jason Momoa famously hated the thought of crossing the “poison water” to help his bride reclaim the Iron Throne of Westeros – but now the hulking Hawaiian is set to dive right into the deep for his new role as Aquaman.

Director Zack Snyder this week tweeted a photo of Momoa clad in Aquaman regalia – complete with trident and armoured scales - confirming rumours the 35-year-old would appear in the upcoming Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice film.

Captioned: “There is only one true king #unitetheseven”, the photo shows the new Aquaman is a long way from previous incarnations of the underwater avenger who never gained the same level of popularity as Batman or other members of DC Comics’ Justice League.

Instead, a sculpted Momoa looks set to give evildoers a real run for their money and movie-lovers agree, with social media exploding after Snyder tweeted the promo shot.

Many tweeter have remarked that Momoa looks set to make Aquaman cool for the first time ever.

Aquaman burst into the DC Comics stable in 1941 and initially served more as a backup character despite his ability to control and speak with fish.

It has been reported that Snyder was planning to use the upcoming Batman v Superman film to introduce the entire league and flesh out the DC Comic movie franchise to rival the ever-expanding Marvel movies.

In June, Hitflix reported Momoa would star in the Batman v Superman movie, but the actor repeatedly denied any involvement in the film.

A former model, Momoa shot to fame after playing Drogo in the HBO fantasy television series Game of Thrones opposite Emilia Clarke, who played his wife Daenerys Targaryen.

The Dothraki chieftain was one of the first major characters to be killed off, in a book and TV series famous for its number of shock deaths.

He also played Conan the Barbarian in the 2011 sword and sorcery fantasy film.

Momoa is also set to star in his own Aquaman solo film in 2018.
