Coalition back in the race, insists Dutton

Home Affairs Minister, Peter Dutton, says the coalition was heading for a “significant defeat” under Malcolm Turnbull but is now “back in the race”.

The man who’s move against Mr Turnbull brought down the former PM, says he has no regrets about his challenge, though admits he has “a black eye and bruised ribs”.

“No, none at all,” Mr Dutton told the Today Show.

“I think it is obvious the government has done very well under Scott Morrison.

“I think he has a very good story to tell. I think people can relate to him.

“I think he is down to earth. He is talking about issues that are relevant to families.”

Inferred in that, is that Malcolm Turnbull wasn’t.

“I believe very strongly we were well on our way to a significant defeat at the election,” he said.

“I honestly believe that.

“I think the government is doing well. I think we are back in the race. We are back in the game.”

It’s five weeks today since Scott Morrison emerged as a surprise winner, after Mr Dutton claimed to have the numbers to take over from Mr Turnbull.

Mr Dutton’s comments come after the former Prime Minister said his political execution was a “form of madness”.

Scott Morrison will today campaign for the Liberal’s Dave Sharma for the October 20 by-election for Mr Turnbull’s seat of Wentworth.
