'Boys will be boys' top pulled from stores after parents complain

A boys' pyjama top has been pulled from shelves after parents claimed it was offensive and sexist.

Made by Australian brand Peter Alexander, the grey top is printed with the slogan: "Boys will be boys".

However soon after it was released, a Melbourne mother took to the brand’s Facebook page to fire off criticism.

"Boys will be held accountable for their actions. I hate to see an Australian store, who makes such great pjs, put such a sexist statement on a t-shirt intended for young boys," Bridie Harris wrote.

"Excusing boys of their behaviour is not a step in the right direction. It’s 2018."

Peter Alexander confirmed the top was being taken off their shelves yesterday in response to complaints.

"We do not tolerate the behaviour that is being associated with this slogan," the statement published by the Sydney Morning Herald read.

The choice for the brand to can the top has triggered a mixed response online, with some arguing there was "nothing inappropriate" about the garment.

"This is ridiculous. Are we starting to strip the innocence away from children? The shirt is just saying kids will be kids," TODAY Show viewer Sophie Cannell posted.

Fellow viewer Phillip Bryant said: "What’s more offensive to me is that the company succumbed to the opinions of just a few parents."
