Worker plunges 20 metres to his death in quarry dump truck

A worker has been killed after plunging 20 metres into the pit of a quarry in Perth’s east this morning.

The man in his 40s was operating a large dump truck at the Red Hill quarry when it rolled to the bottom of the pit about 7am.

Emergency services were immediately called to the scene, but tragically the man couldn’t be saved.

In a statement Hanson Construction group confirmed the fatality and said no other vehicles were involved.

“The accident was tragic and our thoughts go out to the driver’s family, as well as his friends and colleagues,” a Hanson spokesperson said.

The company is fully cooperating with police and is conducting an investigation in conjunction with authorities.

Investigators from the Department of Mines have spent much of the day at the Toodyay Road quarry to determine exactly how the accident occurred.

The Transport Construction Union is aware of the workplace death.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
