Premier calls for sports fans to behave after bottle thrown at player

A sideline attack at a men's state league soccer game in Perth has prompted pushback after a glass bottle was thrown at a player.

The scuffle caused mayhem in the stands just weeks after spectators were banned following a similar brawl at another club.

The beer bottle was pelted at Mandurah FC players as they walked from the field.

Game volunteers desperately tried to hold the man back but he broke free and charged into the change rooms.

Witnesses told 9News the bystander was a player's father from the opposing team, Rockingham.

They had lost the match 3-0.

Earlier in the game a flare thrown onto the field paused play for several minutes.

Premier Mark McGowan urged people to "behave".

"Sometimes people have a few too many drinks and they get too emotional and it can have devastating consequences. I just urge everyone to behave appropriately." McGowan said.

Rockingham FC refused to speak today because of a "pending investigation".

A spokesperson for the Mandurah team said they want to move on from the altercation.

9News understands there has been an ongoing feud between players and spectators.

Football West promised a probe, saying the behaviour wasis not tolerated at local games.

It comes four weeks after crowd sanctions were issued for a separate state league clash that saw a 22-year-old hospitalised for head injuries after being hit by another flying glass bottle.
