Western Australia's newest hospital, the Fiona Stanley, has opened the doors of its emergency department to its first patient.

The 7am opening on Tuesday also marked the closure of the emergency department at Fremantle Hospital, which is being retired as the main health service provider for the southern suburbs.

Health minister Kim Hames said staff at Fiona Stanley's emergency department would see about 95,000 patients a year.

In addition to the emergency department, Tuesday also marked the opening of the $2 billion hospital's acute services including paediatrics, coronary, cancer and mental health care.

Fiona Stanley, which opened in October last year, will be fully operational in March with the start of heart and lung transplant services.
