Perth man fined and hit with bizarre charge after giving window washer $1.50

A Perth man who gave a windscreen washer $1.50 was fined $50 and hit with a bizarrely worded charge. 

WA Police issued Luke Bresland an infringement notice that said “buying a newspaper” after he paid a roadside window washer in Subiaco in February. 

He pleaded not guilty to the odd charge, which has since been dropped by WA Police since 9News shared Mr Bresland's strange story.

The 49-year-old was driving on Roberts Road in Subiaco - when a young man began washing his windscreen.

Mr Bresland says he did not ask the man to do it but handed him around $1.50 once he was finished.

A police officer then pulled him over.

"He asked me if I paid him and I said yes, and he said 'are you aware that's illegal,' and I said no,” Mr Bresland said.

The 49-year-old asked if the police officer would issue him with a caution instead, but the officer declined and issued the $50 fine.

Mr Bresland says he didn’t know it was illegal to pay the window washer and was willing to fight the charge.
