Fremantle Dockers superstar Nat Fyfe has been hospitalised with a serious infection in his right elbow.

The Brownlow Medal winner was put on an antibiotic drip on Tuesday for treatment to the same elbow that was operated on pre-season.

It’s ruled out the 27-year-old of this weekend's home clash with Sydney at Optus Stadium and it's unclear exactly when he'll return to the game.

It’s a major blow for the WA side who are desperate for a win after four consecutive losses sent them plummeting out of the top eight and into 13th place on the AFL ladder.

Several players have also been ruled out of this weekend’s match due to injury.

Coach Ross Lyon recently lashed out on behalf of his star player after Fyfe claimed he was being targeted on-field.

Fyfe has been wearing a compression guard for the entire season.
