WA Treasurer promises an end to big electricity price hikes

Electricity prices are set to stabilise in WA, with Treasurer Ben Wyatt promising things are "certainly getting better".

“The days of those very large increases have come to an end,” he told 9News this morning.

Ahead of the WA state budget being handed down later today, the Treasurer confirmed to Today Perth the McGowan Government will not make major hikes to fees and charges.

“Whether it be power or water or car registration I think people will be, hopefully, very pleased with what we have done,” he said.

WA power prices have skyrocketed over the last ten years by about 117 per cent.

The average family of four in Perth now spends more than $4000 a month on household necessities, not including housing, according to comparison site Numbeo.

While Mr Wyatt did not confirm a cut in costs, he said they will be kept to a minimum as the budget moves back into surplus for the first time in five years.

“The tough times certainly have been felt, but I think over the next 12 months to two years West Australians ought to be very optimistic about our state,” he said.
