'Do people hate us?': Muslim family's car graffitied with swastika

A Muslim family has been the target of a shocking hate crime in Perth’s northern suburbs. 

The Hassan family's car was spray painted with swastikas and insults overnight, including the words “Muslim” and “dogs”. 

Mariam Hassan said she and her 11-month-old son were asleep inside their Clarkson home when the car was vandalised. 

“We have no idea who did it,” she said. 

“Do people hate us? It’s so upsetting.”

The Hassan family believe the offender struck some time between two and four o’clock this morning.

It wasn't until Mrs Hassan's husband woke up to prepare a bottle for their son, that they saw the damage.

“It’s scary,” she said. 

“They could come back, and they could do something worse, they probably won’t even be afraid.” 

Community leaders say the family’s fears are shared by many West Australians, in the wake of last week's tragic Christchurch shooting.

“We ask the community to remain calm,” Imam Burhaan Mehtar said. 

“We ask people to continue showing their support and their love as they have been over the last few days, it has been overwhelming.”

WA's terror threat level remains listed as "probable".

Premier Mark McGowan yesterday assured the public that police are monitoring right wing extremists in the community.

Police are investigating this incident as an act of vandalism, with possible scope for criminal charges under the racial vilification act.

Forensic investigators have examined the car but are yet to identify the offender.  

“It’s like they’re trying to scare you and say, ‘get out of my country’", Mrs Hassan said.
