Perth road a 'death trap' for kangaroos after dozens of deaths

A new road north of Perth has been labelled “a death trap” for kangaroos, after dozens of animals were killed in just over a week.

New Lord Street near Whiteman Park has a speed limit of 60km/h but locals believe some cars are travelling up to 100km/h in the zone.

At the same time, the animals are trying to cross four lanes of traffic to get to a small watering hole on the other side of the road.

Resident Andrea Marzi said the road has become a death trap, with the kangaroos suffering broken necks and legs.

“They do stop at the edge, they're pretty smart animals in a way,” she said.

“They think it's clear and they go across, but the problem is the rest follow and then the cars hit.”

A Facebook animal rescue group has shared photos and videos of badly injured kangaroos in the area.

Mainroads WA  said they will build a new wildlife along the road to prevent more deaths, and will continue to make improvements where necessary.
