Grandfather’s fire safety warning after house goes up in flames

A Perth grandfather is warning families to know their fire escape plan, after a ferocious blaze tore through his Mullaloo home.

Dan Blazic was with his children and four grandchildren, when a fire gutted the multi-million-dollar house on Sunday evening.

"Five minutes from the back of the house to the front of the house and that's all it took, the cedar in the ceiling just exploded like gunpowder," Mr Blazic told 9News.

The family had gathered for a pizza night and when they lost power, Mr Blazic noticed the lights were glowing.

"One of the LED lights, the downlights was glowing which was unusual, so we got the ladder and got it out and there was a fire behind it," he said.

He said there was no time to take anything and they escaped with just the clothes on their backs.

"No sooner I turned around, the flames were behind me and I thought I'm not going to get a chance to do anything... what do you take?" he asked.

Today the 59-year-old began picking through the rubble of the family home, he and his wife had lived in for 12 years.

The businessman has insurance but said memories can't be replaced.

"Its soul destroying when you see something like this or knowing what your house was and knowing what it is," he said.

Mr Blazic believes if the family had been asleep, the fire could have been deadly and wants other families to practice their fire escape plan.

Fire investigators are still trying to determine what caused the fire.
