Elderly Perth couple targeted in daylight hammer home invasion attack

A Perth grandfather has been bashed with a hammer after coming to the defence of his wife during a frightening daylight home invasion.

The woman, aged in her 60s, had just opened her Huntingdale home's garage door to leave about 11am today and had turned back to collect some belongings when the intruder in a hi-vis safety vest confronted her.

"She'd just lifted the garage door, realised she'd forgotten her bag, went in to get it and the intruder had actually followed her in – it was literally seconds," her daughter, Rachel Barber, told 9News.

She screamed and her husband rushed in to help her before the intruder hit his arm with a hammer he'd grabbed from inside the garage.

The attacker then fled and attempted to escape with the couple's car parked in the driveway.

"My dad tried to get him out of the car, he had a broom in his hand I believe and was just trying to get him out," Ms Barber said.

"Dad has a bit of a condition with his heart, which unfortunately came about last week, and (this attack is) certainly not something they need."

After failing to get the Jeep to start the intruder began to smash the inside of the vehicle with the hammer, Ms Barber said.

9News understands the attacker – who may be linked to a string of similar burglaries in the area - managed to flee the scene in another getaway vehicle that had been waiting nearby.

The shaken couple, who have asked not to be identified, were taken to Fiona Stanley Hospital for further treatment. Forensic officers continue to examine their home for any evidence.
