Perth grandfather stranded in Bali after breaking leg and having stroke

A Perth grandfather on his first holiday in five years has become gravely ill in Bali with fears he may not be able to return to Australia.

Alan Conway, 84, was on a trip to the Indonesian island with son Marc when he fell and broke his leg, and then had a stroke.

Mr Conway has since developed a viral rash which has grown to cover his entire body, causing doctors to delay an operation on his shattered leg.

Medical staff are concerned the infection will spread and the 84-year-old won’t survive.

“It’s very aggressive, and if it gets into his blood system and goes to his brain it could kill him,” Marc Conway told 9NEWS.

“He’s had a stroke in the last three days as well as a broken leg, he’s having trouble breathing and he’s wheezing very much and they keep delaying the operation because of the rash.”

Mr Conway, who spent the last several years caring for his wife before she passed away, was insured for around $40,000 but the cost of a medivac could cost more than double that.

An online fundraising page has been set up to try and bring the 84-year-old home.
