A Perth family is grieving the loss of their six-year-old son after he was hit and killed by a car in Maddington.

The tragedy struck yesterday evening, 10 minutes after a Little Athletics training session when the young boy was playing with his father, brothers and friends around the car park.

Just before 6.30pm, witnesses say a young boy unexpectedly ran out in front of a Honda, as his mother watched on in horror.

There was "just a heart-wrenching scream", witness Rebecca Gilby told 9News.

The Somali community are tonight rallying around the family.

"Very tragic, it's kind of sent a shock for her to believe her boy was just running around here playing and already dead in seconds," Hassan Egal, President of the Somali Community of WA told 9News.

"It will be a little bit of time before they get back to normal."

Parents, including an off-duty nurse, performed CPR but he couldn't be saved.
