Perth drag racer walks away from high-speed crash

A drag race driver in Perth has walked away uninjured after a spectacular 260km/h crash.

Errol Quartermaine’s car skidded off the surface of the Perth Motorplex, in Kwinana, on Saturday night.

It clipped the concrete barrier and overturned several times after hitting the speed of 260km/h, reports Perth Now.

Flames shot out the rolling car and debris from the vehicle was strewn across the track when it finally came to rest.

Race officials rushed to the overturned vehicle but Quartermaine eventually hauled himself out the wreckage and walked away unhurt.

“I was upside down and stayed in the harness because if I got out of it, I thought I would have fallen on my head,” Mr Quartermaine explained.

“But if it hadn’t been for that, I would actually have been quite comfortable in there.

“The biggest thing I was worried about was fire because I’d seen the sparks from when the car hit the road and the one thing you don’t want is to be trapped when there’s a fire.”

But his car was not so lucky and requires extensive repairs.
