Perth construction worker dies after falling into trench filled with water

The body of a construction worker has been recovered overnight after he was killed in a shocking accident on a Perth worksite.

The man became stuck after falling into a four-metre trench, which was filled with water and collapsed on a building side at Mosman Park at 3pm (local time).

It took crews up to eight hours to retrieve his body, using specialised equipment.

Worksafe will investigate the circumstances surrounding the death, which is the second workplace death in a week in Western Australia.

Earlier this week, a tree lopper aged in his 40s was struck by a branch while in a cherry picker in Waroona.

Yesterday, witnesses said they heard the construction worker screaming that his leg was stuck.

His colleagues tried to get into the water to pull him out while nearby onlookers passed him a hose pipe to try and help him breath.

Sadly, he could not be saved.

9News understands that a water main in the trench may have burst, causing the trench to collapse.

A report is being prepared for the coroner.
