Carjacker's dangerous ride leaves trail of destruction in Perth

A Perth university student became the victim of a terrifying carjacking which began when a man jumped onto her windscreen.

Police say the alleged carjacker forced the 21-year-old woman out of her Toyota Echo, on the Great Eastern Highway in Burswood, hitting another vehicle as he drove off.

"I saw him swerving in and out of cars coming towards me and I said 'holy moly he's going to hit me' and that's what happened - smashed into the back of me," said witness Peter Bruning.

The driver took the stolen car on a wild ride through the southern suburbs, where witnesses say he had several near misses.

The damaged car was captured on CCTV driving down Acton Avenue, after the driver smashed into a power pole and lost a tyre.

The joyride came to a crashing end two kilometres away when the car slammed into a bollard.

Police allege the driver was so intoxicated he continued to rev the accelerator - and was still in the car when police arrived.

A 32-year-old-man has been charged over the incident.
