Australians are being encouraged to donate blood during the coronavirus crisis to ensure the nation's stocks remain strong.

Blood plasma in particular has been identified as a potentially potent weapon against COVID-19 as health authorities work to treat patients who are most ill.

"Australia's blood reserves are strong ... over the next few months, we want to ensure that they continue to be strong," Health Minister Greg Hunt said on Monday.

He set an example by rolling up his sleeve to donate blood ahead of the media conference.
