Pensions bill could be debated next week

A Senate inquiry into the government's planned age pension changes will report back earlier than expected, clearing the way for their quick passage through parliament.

An upper house committee report on legislation that tightens pension assets tests and creates $2.4 billion in budget savings, will be tabled on Monday rather than in August as previously planned.

The government has struck a deal with the Australian Greens to get the measure through the Senate and the earlier reporting date allows debate to begin next week.
