A major stadium upgrade is coming to Western Sydney, with the people of Penrith set to benefit.

Panthers Stadium, commercially known as BlueBet Stadium, is set to be knocked down and rebuilt as early as next year.

The timeline of the massive redevelopment could see the new stadium open in time for the 2025 NRL season.

9News has been told the NSW government is waiting for final approval on the plans for a 25,000-30,000 seat venue, similar to Bankwest Stadium in Parramatta.

The new arena would be built using funds previously earmarked for the Stadium Australia refurbishment, which was cancelled last year.

Penrith's new stadium is being prioritised over similar venues in Brookvale, Kogarah and Liverpool.
