Lost penguin found trapped in inner Sydney drain
The RSPCA say the rescued penguin will be released back into the wild shortly.
A baby fairy penguin found trapped in a drain in Sydney's inner west will soon be returned to the wild, the RSPCA says.
Two local men were walking in Haberfield when they heard strange penguin-like noises coming from a stormwater pipe on Thursday afternoon and to their surprise found a penguin trapped in a smaller pipe in the drain, reports AAP.
They attempted to free the flightless bird, who was distressed and making "wild noises", but it got stuck in the opening. It wasn't until there was a sudden gush of water rushing down the pipe that the little guy was freed.
He was rushed to Taronga Zoo for examination and found to be slightly underweight but otherwise healthy.
He's been given fluids and food and his future is looking bright.
"He should be released back into the wild shortly, to happily live out his days eating fish and engaging in other penguin-related activities," a RSPCA spokeswoman said.
The origin of the tiny Sydney adventurer is not known, but there are fairy penguin colonies in Manly and Sydney Harbour.
