PAULINE HANSON'S POLITICAL CAREER

1994 - Elected as independent Ipswich councillor.

1996 - Endorsed as Liberal candidate for Oxley but later disendorsed over racist comments. Wins the seat as an independent.

1996 - Questions multiculturalism during maiden parliamentary speech, utters the widely parodied "please explain" phrase during an interview when asked if she was xenophobic.

1997 - Co-founds One Nation with David Oldfield and David Ettridge.

1998 - Loses federal seat

2001 - Runs for Queensland Senate seat as One Nation candidate. Loses.

2003 - Moves to Sylvania Waters, Sydney, and runs for NSW upper house seat. Loses.

August - Found guilty of election fraud and sentenced to three years jail.

November - Conviction is quashed on appeal.

2004 - Runs for Queensland Senate seat as independent. Loses. Comes runner-up on Dancing with the Stars.

2007 - Launches Pauline's United Australia Party and fails to pick up a Qld Senate seat.

2009 - Stands as Independent for Qld seat of Beaudesert. Loses.

2011 - After a year in the UK, nominates as a candidate for the NSW upper-house and unsuccessfully challenges her narrow loss.

2013 - Announces she will rejoin One Nation and run for a NSW Senate seat at the September federal election. Loses.

2014 - Announces she has the backing of the executive to return as leader, with the party to be rebranded Pauline Hanson's One Nation.
