'Gotta be quick': Pauline Hanson's epic toad chase

Senator Pauline Hanson has put herself to the test to see how she'd fare taking part in her controversial cane-toad catching proposal.

The Queensland Senator appeared on A Current Affair to spruik the benefits of her plan.

She said a three-month cane toad collection scheme, in which people who caught cane toads would be paid 10 cents per pest, could help keep the invasive species at bay.

But Senator Hanson had to get her own hands dirty when she was challenged to catch a toad herself.

She admitted as she pulled on a pair of safety gloves that she was not too experienced at tackling the pests by hand.

"I normally line them up with my car and make sure it goes under the wheel," she said.

"So that's what I think of cane toads, we've got to get rid of them."

Released from a bucket, the toad made a bid for freedom, leaping ahead of the pursuing Senator, who gamely gave pursuit.

Though she doggedly stuck to its trail, the renegade amphibian was eventually scooped back up into its bucket, from where Senator Hanson plucked it.

"You gotta be quick to get the cane toad," she said.

"Before they hit Canberra, there are some two-legged toads I'd like to get rid of, but let's start with these."

Senator Hanson's proposal has met with criticism from experts including University of Queensland Professor Rob Capon, who said it was unlikely to have an impact on the fast-breeding pests.
