Double-decker buses to transform Parramatta Road

Rapid double-decker buses will run every few minutes along Parramatta Road in a new plan to transform one of the most notorious stretches of road in Sydney.

9NEWS can reveal the NSW Government is finalising plans to run a "turn up and go" service from Homebush to around Central Station, similar to the B-Line on the Northern Beaches.

One lane in both directions on Parramatta Road will be dedicated to the new bus service.

The government was forced into coming up with a new public transport service for the corridor, after then-Planning Minister Rob Stokes only approved the M4 East tunnel on the proviso Parramatta Road was cleaned up.

"We have to find a mass transit solution down Parramatta Road," Transport Minister Andrew Constance said.

"We are exploring how we do that with 'turn up and go' buses."

The success of the B-Line buses from the Northern Beaches to Wynyard convinced the government it was the best option.

The double-deckers make up just 10 percent of the fleet in that area, but already carry more than 25 percent of all passengers.

There was initially an option of a light rail down Parramatta Road to link up at Olympic Park, but the cost and disruption quickly ruled it out.

Inner West Council was pushing for trackless trams, which are narrower than buses and would run in the centre of the road, but that was knocked back by government.

"More buses down Parramatta Road sounds like business as usual," Councillor Anna York said.

The buses are expected to be on the road after the M4 East opens in the middle of 2019.
