Parramatta remains in lockdown after fatal shooting

Parramatta, in Sydney’s west, remains in lock down, after a gunman shot dead a worker at police headquarters, before being fatally gunned down by police this afternoon.

A two-kilometre exclusion zone remains in effect around the Charles Street building, more than three hours after the 4.30pm shooting.

Drivers and pedestrians should avoid the area, a NSW Police Force spokeswoman said.

“We’re advising pedestrians and motorists to avoid the vicinity of Church St and Hassall St in Parramatta,” she said.

“We’ve set up an exclusion zone and we ask everyone to stay away until otherwise advised.”

Residential and commercial buildings in the area were also placed in lockdown.

The shooting took place in a street close to a childcare centre used by police force families, and parents are unable to collect their children.

The parents are waiting at the perimeter of the exclusion zone.

Police in body armour have been seen patrolling the Parramatta CBD and other officers are guarding nearby Parramatta train station.
