Study shows high-level of discrimination against parents in workplace

A landmark report says discrimination against parents in the workforce is still rife in Australia, with many women believing that they are still being punished for falling pregnant.

A single-mother told 9NEWS that she was sacked when she tried to return to work after the birth of her first child.

She’s not alone – a report released today by the Human Rights Commission found that one in five women lost their position after sharing news of their pregnancy.

The report also said that 50 per cent of women claimed that they had suffered discrimination in the workplace over the period of their pregnancy.

Research showed that 91 per cent of women stayed silent on the issue, making no complaints to either their employer or a government authority.
