Clive Palmer is set to unveil his candidates for the Victorian election, hoping the spotlight doesn't fall instead on ructions within his fledgling party.

The Palmer United Party will launch its tilt for the November 29 poll in Melbourne today.

The event has been rescheduled to late afternoon to avoid a clash with the Victorian Liberals' regional campaign launch.

Another clash may prove harder to avoid - the rift between Mr Palmer and outspoken PUP senator Jacqui Lambie on the issue of Defence pay.

Senator Lambie has said she will defy her own party if required and vote against all government legislation until its pay offer to Defence personnel is increased.

The Victorian poll will be the third state election contested by PUP this year, after the South Australian and Tasmanian elections.

A PUP candidate is yet to be elected to a state parliament.

PUP-held seats in the Queensland and Northern Territory parliaments were the result of sitting members switching their allegiance.
