Palmer parks fancy cars

The Rolls, the Bentley and the Mercedes stayed in the garage as Clive Palmer travelled at taxpayer expense to parliament.

Just three weeks ago the Palmer United Party leader entertained Canberra-watchers with a series of extravagant vehicles.

MPs didn't need to travel in taxpayer-funded Comcars, he declared.

The money could be better spent on pensioners.

And if they didn't own a Rolls, they could catch a taxi.

But on Monday he rolled up to work in a white Holden Comcar.

He'd never promised not to use taxpayer-funded cars, he told waiting reporters.

"We've got to keep people employed in the Commonwealth, haven't we?" he said.

When asked why he was using a Comcar after having made such a fuss about his fancy cars, Mr Palmer said it was "so the other guys don't feel bad" when they had to take a government car.

"We don't want everyone to feel bad at once," he said.
