Palmer builds political base in north Qld

Businessman Clive Palmer has begun a concerted effort to build support for his United Australia Party in north Queensland, buying a luxury apartment in Townsville and appointing a full-time party administrator.

Former One Nation and Palmer United Party candidate Jen Sackley will run the UAP's operations in Townsville and Cairns, Mr Palmer announced on Tuesday.

Ms Sackley, a social worker, is a long-time north Queensland resident with a "very strong commitment to giving struggling families a voice", Mr Palmer said.

The colourful mining magnate is considering a run for the federal seat of Herbert at the election due by May next year, seeking to topple Labor's Cathy O'Toole.

In a Twitter post on Tuesday, Mr Palmer wrote he had received the "keys to the new pad in Townsville".

He also wrote he and his company QNI Resources had "splashed out" $10,000 to support a local swimming club in Townsville.

Providing such community support was why it was so important that the nickel refinery return to operation as soon as possible, he said.

Mr Palmer is facing ongoing court action over the collapse of Queensland Nickel.

The Townsville refinery's closure in 2016 left about 800 workers without jobs and millions owed to creditors.

Mr Palmer said in May he did not owe anyone any money, and boasted a worth of $3 billion.
