Celebrity chef Pete Evans has again come under fire for controversial nutritional advice, after reportedly declaring calcium from dairy products "can actually remove the calcium from your bones".
The My Kitchen Rules co-host warned a woman with osteoporosis to avoid dairy, during a question and answer session on his Facebook page last Sunday, The Herald Sun reports.
The woman said her doctor "insists that medication is the only way", and Evans then suggested she remove dairy from her diet to comply with the paleo diet.
"I haven’t given my kids dairy for over five years and they are thriving," he added.
Osteoporosis Australia’s Peter Ebeling told the newspaper Evans’ claims were "really bad and just not true".
"You can’t assume what he says is scientifically correct," Prof. Ebeling said.
"The keystone to preventing osteoporosis is adequate calcium intake and this is achieved by three (daily) serves of calcium-rich foods like dairy.
"Dairy is the most easily available source and has the highest calcium content in it."
