A new Australian study has revealed that the controversial paleo diet may actually cause rapid weight gains and rises in insulin levels.

The caveman-inspired diet was put under the microscope by researchers at the University of Melbourne who aimed to highlight the benefits of the high-fat, low-carbohydrate regimen.

Instead, the results of the study published by the Nutrition and Diabetes journal revealed a 15 percent weight gain in the rats the research was conducted on.

According to the researchers, the mouse and human genomes are very similar so it is believed the results would be mirrored in people.

In addition to the increase in weight, it appeared that the rats that were put on the classic paleo diet experienced accelerated impact of pre-diabetes such as gluten intolerances.
