'Wolf Pack' rape sentencing sparks massive protests

Thousands have gathered in Spain to protest the sentences handed down to a group of rapists who called themselves "the Wolf Pack".

The five Spanish men were sentenced to nine years each in prison for a gang rape during the 2016 running of the bulls festival in Pamplona, a case that drew controversy for the way the victim was treated during the trial.

The five members, who nicknamed themselves "La Manada" or "The Pack," commonly used to refer to a pack of wolves, argued during last year's proceedings that the young woman consented.

To support their argument, the defence produced a detective's report on her behaviour after the July 2016 rape.

The court announced it found the men guilty of sex abuse but not sexual aggression, in which violence must be seen.

They must also jointly compensate her 50,000 euros ($85,400) and refrain from contacting her for 15 years.

However, the prosecution had sought to have the men convicted of rape, which can carry prison sentences of more than 20 years.

The verdict can be appealed, and the victim's lawyer indicated they would do so.

Women's groups have led massive protests through Pamplona calling for stronger sentences.
