CLIMATE CHANGE ACTION POSITIONS OF AUSTRALIA, NEW ZEALAND AND PACIFIC ISLAND NATIONS

AUSTRALIA

* 26 to 28 per cent emissions reduction by 2030 on 2005 levels

* committed to international goal of limiting global warming to two degrees

* $2.55 billion direct action policy to cut emissions - pays polluters not to pollute

* pledged $200 million for Green Climate Fund from existing foreign aid budget

* elected co-chair of Green Climate Fund

* criticised by climate groups for weak targets, ineffective policy and unsatisfactory finance pledge

* wants five-yearly reviews of emissions reduction targets

NEW ZEALAND

* 30 per cent emissions reduction by 2030 on 2005 levels

* committed to international goal of limiting global warming to two degrees

* emissions trading scheme to cut emissions

* $3 million pledged for Green Climate Fund

* around 80 per cent of nation's energy is renewable, main emissions from agriculture

PACIFIC ISLANDS

* believe climate change is the most serious threat to Pacific Island nations

* committed to limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees

* want financing for mitigation, adaptation and loss and damage

* want "an ambitious and legally binding" agreement at the United Nations conference in Paris

* expect Australia to pledge significant funding for developing nations

* want five-yearly reviews of emissions reduction targets

* some nations have been critical of Australia for not being ambitious enough and pleaded for the "big brother" to go into bat for the Pacific Islands in Paris

* Kiribati has called for a moratorium on new coal mines

* some countries could become uninhabitable within 15 to 35 years.
