Outback royals in safe hands
Sammy Wilson has shown countless people the wonders of Uluru and now the Anangu traditional owner and senior guide has a special job to do.
Mr Wilson will guide the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge on a walk to a waterhole at the base of Uluru on Tuesday.
He will tell the royal couple the stories of the rock and introduce them to the tjukurpa (pronounced "chook-orr-pa") - the creation story and laws that describe and shape Anangu life and land.
"The royal couple are special people that come from a special family and they are visiting a special place in the world that Anangu have the responsibility of looking after," Mr Wilson said, speaking through an interpreter in the Pitjantjatjara language.
"The special people that look after the special place are happy to be looking after the special people coming to visit us."
Prince William and Kate will be in for appropriately royal treatment during their Uluru visit.
While all tourists are given an insight into the tjukurpa, the walk for the duke and duchess will be more intimate.
Mr Wilson, who believes he's aged around 51 (he was born in the bush and his date of birth was not recorded), isn't worried Prince George won't be with his parents for the tour.
He's confident the nine-month-old will experience Uluru for himself when the time is right.
"When he grows up he'll come here," he said.
Mr Wilson's uncle was at Uluru in 1983 when Prince Charles and Diana visited with a then-infant William.
"My uncle was here and my family was here but I was working on a cattle station," he said.
Prince William and Kate will visit Uluru after a welcome to country ceremony, meeting Northern Territory school students at an afternoon tea and presenting certificates at an indigenous training academy.
The royals will spend the night in a luxury tent resort with stunning views of the rock.
