The Hume Freeway has been closed at Epping, north of Melbourne, as firefighters work to bring a grass fire under control.

Smoke from the fire is billowing over the freeway near Cooper Street, Victoria’s Country Fire Authority (CFA) said in a Watch and Act alert.

“Firefighters have been unable to stop the fire and it has now crossed O'Hearns Road and is travelling in a southerly direction and is impacting Cooper Street,” the alert read.

9NEWS helicopter footage shows a building destroyed in the blaze.

The freeway is closed in both directions from Craigieburn Road at Wollert to the Metropolitan Ring Road at Thomastown, according to VicTraffic.
