It's been almost 12 months since major cracks forced the evacuation of Opal Tower at Olympic Park.

Now the company who built the apartment block in Sydney's west has blamed the structural design engineers.

In documents lodged in the NSW Supreme Court, Icon alleges the damage occurred due to design failures by structural engineers, WSP Structures.

Icon claims it completed the $170-million-dollar complex to WSP's instructions.

It now wants WSP to pay around $30 million it spent to fix the problems.

Among the costs was almost $14 million to rectify the common property and close to $7 million to accommodation and storage providers.

It's all part of a counter-claim in response to the class action lodged in the NSW Supreme Court by Opal Tower residents in July.
