Online protester harnesses Bernardi name

Type in CoryBernardi.com.au on your browser and you won't find yourself on a conservative Liberal politician's website.

You'll instead find a page featuring a loud and colourful rainbow flag with the statement "compassion lives here".

That's a play on Senator Bernardi's tag line: "Common sense lives here".

So it's clear the site is not Senator Bernardi having an about-face on his opposition to gay marriage.

The man behind the domain-grab noticed Senator Bernardi had not registered the site after researching the politician's comments about the controversial Safe Schools program.

Melbourne-based Tim Michaluk says he was disheartened with the language discrediting the gay and lesbian focused schools program, so he decided to do something about it.

"I thought wouldn't it be great if instead of seeing something negative about the LGBTI community when looking up Cory, they'd see something more positive," he told AAP.

Mr Michaluk wants to use the site to redirect people, most likely Bernardi supporters, to show them the human side of their criticisms.

People would share their experiences to counteract the negativity from conservative Liberals around gay and lesbian issues.

He was motivated by his own experience as a child, terrified of imagining the reaction if he came out in school.

"People calling me a `faggot', `poof' or what-not. Teachers, students - everyone. People kicking me, spitting on me and punching me.

"Those words were common in the school ground."

Another motivation came from news stories of people being beaten up, and even killed, for being gay.

An independent review of the Safe Schools program is being handed to the government on Friday.

Mr Michaluk reckons many young people will be affected if the program is cut or changed.

"It's sad that there are some politicians out there who care more about whether someone uses the female or male bathrooms than an LGBTI attempting to or taking their own life."

Comment is being sought from Senator Bernardi.
