Man killed in suspected machete attack on suburban street

Police are investigating after a man was killed during a violent clash between two groups in Melbourne.

It’s believed the argument broke out on Castley Crescent, Braybrook, about 9.30pm yesterday.

“It sounded like they were angry…a lot of words going on,” local woman Joy told 9NEWS.

A car was then used to mow down two of the men involved in the fight before they were bashed with weapons, including what is believed to be a machete.

“I could see about four or five men just laying into this guy and saying ‘where is he, where is he’,” a witness, who requested to remain anonymous, said.

One of the victims staggered across the road and begged for help, prompting residents to dial Triple Zero.

The injured pair, aged 40 and 44, were taken to hospital.

The younger man died, while the 44-year-old remains in a serious but stable condition.

Their alleged attackers, described as being African in appearance, were last seen driving from the scene in a silver hatchback, police said.

9NEWS understands detectives are investigating whether the same vehicle was dumped on Ivanhoe Street in the nearby suburb of St Albans.

Police continue to urge anyone with information to come forward.
