Australian Olympic Committee advises shooter Michael Diamond he can't compete at the Rio Olympics

Champion shooter Michael Diamond has been ruled ineligible to compete at the Rio Olympics, but he can still appeal Shooting Australia’s decision.

The Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) said in a statement they had facilitated a meeting with the 44-year-old athlete today and informed him of the decision.

The dual Olympic gold medallist faces firearms and drink-driving charges, which he has pleaded not guilty to.

“Shooting Australia arrived at its position after considering the AOC’s nomination and selection standards,” the statement from the AOC read.

Shooting Australia CEO Damien Marangon said the sporting bodies were still supporting Diamond.

“The incident involving Michael Diamond has, in our view, put our sport in a position which is inappropriate,” Mr Marangon said.

“This is an extremely difficult time for Michael and Shooting Australia will continue to be there for him as he needs.”

Diamond has previously competed in six Olympic games.

He has not yet indicated whether he will appeal the decision.

It's been an unfortunate week for Australia's medal chances at the games - golfer Jason Day has pulled out over concerns about the Zika virus, and champion hurdler Sally Pearson tore a tendon in her hamstring, forcing her to miss the games.
