'At least 2m long shark' forces closure of Victoria beach

A large shark, believed to be at least 2 metres long, spotted off a beach south of Melbourne has forced swimmers from the water.

Lifesaving Victoria said the Ocean Grove beach was closed just after 4.15pm today when the Westpac chopper sighted the unknown species.

Footage obtained by 9NEWS shows lifesavers escorting beachgoers from the water.

It's not clear when the beach will reopen. 

Ocean Grove is about 100km south-west of Melbourne.
