Eddie Obeid ordered to hand over passports

Former Labor powerbroker Eddie Obeid has been ordered to hand over his passports following his latest bail hearing.

Justice David Davies ordered duel-citizen Obeid to hand over both his Australian and Lebanese passports over fears he would be impossible to extradite were he to flee the country.

Justice Davies also ordered Obeid not to approach key Crown witness and former deputy Maritime NSW chief executive Stephen Dunn.

The court heard Obeid had wanted to travel to Lebanon to supervise renovations on his home in Matrite in north Lebanon.

However, the prosecution argued if the accused absconded to Lebanon it would be virtually impossible to extradite him.

Obeid is charged with misconduct in public office over alleged inducements to Mr Dunn over the extension of leases for lucrative family-owned businesses in Sydney's Circular Quay in 2007.

When he was last before court in mid-December, Obeid successfully fought a similar bid to have his passport confiscated as part of the conditions of his bail.

He said at the time that he had full confidence in the legal system and looked forward to clearing his name.
