Obama phones Abbott to say thanks

US President Barack Obama has thanked Tony Abbott for his service and commended his leadership in the fight against Islamic State extremists.
Mr Obama phoned the former prime minister on Wednesday morning.
The US leader told Mr Abbott he'd been a very good "mate" on many important issues.
