Mum of Oatlands car crash victim confirmed as Liberal election candidate for Strathfield by-election

The mother of one of the victims of the 2020 Oatlands car crash that left four children dead, has been confirmed as the NSW Liberal Party's by-election candidate for Strathfield.

Bridget Sakr spoke at a press conference with Premier Dominic Perrottet this morning about why she'd decided to run.

Ms Sakr's daughter, Veronique, and her cousins Antony, Angelina and Sienna Abdallah, were killed when a drunk driver crashed into their group in Oatlands in February 2020.

Today, Ms Sakr said that while she had never aspired to be in politics, her daughter's death had changed things.

"When tragedy hits you, your perspective on life changes," she said.

Noticeably emotional, she said she had been motivated to represent her community after it rallied around her family in support.

"We are broken, we're still broken," Ms Sakr said.

"Grief never goes away."

Ms Sakr also offered a tribute to the victims of the Devonport jumping castle tragedy.

"That was my daughter's birthday, last Thursday," she said.

"I know the pain those families are feeling, it cut me to the bone."

Road safety will be one of the issues she will focus on if she wins the seat.

Mr Perrottet praised Ms Sakr as a woman of great strength and strong values.

"To have somebody like Bridget put her hand up to run in public life, the Liberal Party is blessed but even more so are the people of Strathfield," he said.

The by-election for Strathfield was triggered when incumbent MP, Labor's Jodi McKay, announced her retirement from Parliament in October.

Labor has a five per cent margin in the seat, which it has held since 2015.
