'A national disgrace': Nursing home residents fed for $6 per day

Australian nursing homes are spending $6 a day to feed residents, a new study has found.

The research led by Bond University's Cherie Hugo revealed that aged care homes across the nation dedicate $6.08 to providing a full day of meals. 

By comparison, jails spend $8.25 on prisoners, while the average Australian spends $14 on food per day, according to Commonwealth Bank data.

Photos shared to 9news.com.au from the daughter of a Queensland nursing home resident showed just one example of a dinner at the facility.

Two small pieces of corned silverside are shown dried out on a plate, while another image shows cut up pieces of sausage with a few potatoes.

“The food is given a fancy name on the menu but sadly does not live up to its standards and the photos below show the lack of quality,” the woman wrote.

The Australian Medical Association (AMA) has since labelled the report findings "disgraceful and appalling".

“My children’s guinea pigs get fresh ingredients and more money spent on them,’’ AMA President Michael Gannon told the Courier-Mail.

“It’s a national disgrace the way we treat our aged.”

The report also found that the budget for meals in nursing homes was cut by 30 cents per resident last year.
