US sailor to go on trial for rape in NT

An American sailor will stand trial in October over the alleged rape of a Darwin woman.

The US Navy brought Hugh Patrick Malone, 23, back to Darwin to face the Supreme Court on Monday.

He will stand trial in October on charges of sexual assault, indecent assault and depriving a woman of her liberty on September 4, 2013.

Two witnesses testified at his committal hearing in June that a trio of Darwin women would go out every night the USS Denver was in port, and had met Malone and his friends a few times at bars in the city.

One woman alleged she was raped when she left a bar with Malone and went back with him to a nearby hotel room he had booked.
