Police called to hostage situation on Darwin street

Police have resolved a hostage incident in Darwin peacefully after a man armed with a handgun held several people hostage.

Negotiations began with the man at around 7.30pm, with police calling in the heavily-armed Territory Response Group and dog operations unit to the scene in Anula.

The situation was resolved by 10pm and police are expected to hold a press conference.

9NEWS Darwin reports three people were taken from the scene by police.
