Darwin driver shows exactly how not to cross a creek

One Northern Territorian has demonstrated exactly the wrong way to try and ford a river in a vehicle.

Video of the incident, shot at Gunn Point near Darwin last night, shows the Land Cruiser driving off the sand and directly into the water.

Despite calls of “don’t stop, don’t stop!” from the bank, the driver appears to slacken off speed as his ute hits the water.

Predictably, the Land Cruiser then stalls and quickly sinks almost beneath the waterline.

As onlookers offer up helpful advice, including “nearly got there”, “keep going” and “f---ing idiot”, the driver emerges from the flooded cabin and starts swimming to shore - despite earlier croc sightings.

Camper, Kara McGree, caught the whole incident on video and said the driver confidently told the people around him “I’ll make it through”.

Apparently not.

The tail end of the video shows a salvage operation beginning, with several people gathering up ropes and a tow line.

They managed to pull the vehicle out of the water today.

The vehicle’s condition is unknown.

The incident has prompted a warning from NT police, who have urged drivers not to try and ford waterways they can't see the bottom of.
