NT wraps up holiday roads operation

An average of 10 drivers per day have been caught speeding by Northern Territory Police during a two-week road safety operation.

A total of 133 drivers were booked for speeding during the 13-day operation over the holiday period, and 75 drivers - or almost six per day - tested above the blood alcohol limit, one-third of those high-range.

Failing to wear a seatbelt saw 98 people booked, which Superintendent Serge Bouma said on Tuesday was just lazy driving and a failure to consider safety.

Police caught 120 people driving unregistered vehicles and 47 were booked for driving without a license.

But more than 7000 drivers tested negative to alcohol, which Supt Bouma said gave police some faith that the majority were doing the right thing.

He said that on a ten-year average, there are 2158 motor vehicle crashes every year in the NT, with 43 people killed and almost 400 seriously injured.
